About Oglebay

Oglebay began as Waddington Farm, the country estate of Earl W. Oglebay, a Cleveland industrialist who spent about 25 years shaping the land and left it to the people of Wheeling when he died in 1926. It opened as Oglebay Park in 1928. Federal work programs in the 1930s added trails, cabins and an outdoor theater, and Wilson Lodge opened in 1957.

Today the resort covers 2,000 acres in Wheeling, about an hour from Pittsburgh. It has the Good Zoo, two championship courses at the Speidel Golf Club, a spa and more than 200 rooms at Oglebay Lodge, plus cottages, cabins and rental homes, so out-of-town guests can stay where the wedding is.

Weddings run from 25 to 500 guests. For an outdoor ceremony, the Formal Gardens on the Hilltop sit between the Mansion Museum and the former Guest House and hold up to 150. Receptions move to rooms like the Glessner Auditorium in the lodge, an 8,000-square-foot split-level ballroom with a raised stage, or the Pine Room in Hess Hall, a 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps building with a stone fireplace and views of the pool.

Planning your night at Oglebay

The drive from Pittsburgh

Oglebay is a trip from our Pittsburgh base, and we handle our own travel, gear and setup, as we do for every destination event. We time the drive so our engineer still has the full two hours on site before your guests arrive.

Garden vows, indoor party

A Formal Gardens ceremony means planning for power and weather. We confirm power near the ceremony spot and a rain plan with your Oglebay wedding planner, and we keep the ceremony setup simple enough to move indoors.

A stage that is already there

The Glessner Auditorium comes with a raised stage, screens, its own sound system and lighting, and the Pine Room has a stage as well. We still bring our full PA and our engineer, and we work with the resort's team on how their stage, power and lighting fit with ours.

Music for the whole weekend

With guests staying on site, the music can go beyond the reception. The Eddie & Gabby duo suits a rehearsal dinner at a smaller spot such as Caddy Camp, a 1930s cottage on the Crispin Golf Course that seats 64, and a DJ after-party can follow the band.
